Where does optimism come from? That's the question I've spent the past 2 years researching for my upcoming book – The Deliberate Optimist.

My core argument

Most people think optimism is something you're born with. They're wrong. Twenty-seven remarkable lives – spanning grief, failure, illness, and recovery – tell a different story. Optimism has origins. It has methods. It has a practice. And it is available to everyone.

The science agrees: the brain can be retrained, the habit can be built, the choice can always be made. In a world drowning in anxiety and leadership burnout, deliberate optimism is not a luxury. It is the most powerful, most underused skill on the planet.

This book will show you how to choose it.

It was only later, looking back at my parents' choice in the wake of Lizzie's death, that I began to ask different questions. Not "am I an optimist?" but "where did this come from?" And more importantly "could anyone choose it?"
